What happened

The US government will revoke the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) designation of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as al-Nusrah Front, effective July 8. This move aligns with President Trump’s May 13 pledge to ease sanctions on Syria and supports recent political changes in the region.
The decision follows HTS’s announced dissolution and renewed commitments by the Syrian government to combat terrorism in all its forms. It also complements the June 30 Executive Order revoking broad Syria-related sanctions. US officials cited positive developments under the leadership of President Ahmed al-Sharaa as key factors in the policy shift.
According to the Trump administration, lifting the FTO label marks a significant step in fostering stability and unity in Syria. Yet the administration emphasized that while HTS is no longer designated, the US remains vigilant in counterterrorism efforts and will reassess actions if necessary.
