What happened

The explosion that occurred in an apartment in Sassari could have been caused by two gas cylinders that were found to be disconnected and with their taps open. The explosion left a 63-year-old man with extensive burns and in a coma. The discovery of the disconnected cylinders leads investigators to believe that the explosion was an act of self-harm rather than a domestic accident. Firefighters had just arrived in response to reports of a strong smell of gas when the apartment exploded, throwing debris and destroying parked cars. Two passers-by suffered minor injuries, but no firefighters were hurt. The victim was found under the rubble in his kitchen. He was rescued by firefighters and taken to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari in a critical condition.
