What happened

The first case of measles in Wyoming (USA) since 2010 has been reported, involving an unvaccinated child in Natrona County. The Wyoming Department of Health confirmed the case on 1 July and noted that the child was contagious while visiting Banner Wyoming Medical Center at the end of June. Health officials are contacting individuals who may have been exposed, advising them to monitor for symptoms for 21 days and to avoid crowded places or high-risk settings. This case contributes to the increasing number of measles infections in the USA, where 1,227 cases had been confirmed by early July, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most cases (95%) are among unvaccinated individuals or those with an unknown vaccination status. Wyoming is the 37th state to report measles cases this year. Three deaths have been confirmed nationally: two in unvaccinated children in Texas and one in an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico. In Natrona County, 96% of kindergartners had received at least one dose of the vaccine by 2023.
