What happened

A Danish man has been arrested in Denmark on suspicion of spying for an Iranian intelligence service and will be extradited to Germany to face charges. German prosecutors have identified the suspect only as Ali S and allege that he conducted surveillance in Germany to prepare terrorist attacks on Jewish targets. The Iranian embassy in Berlin has swiftly rejected these accusations, describing them as ‘unfounded and dangerous.’ The embassy has suggested that ‘certain third parties’ are attempting to manipulate public perception. According to Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, the suspect photographed at least three buildings in Berlin in June. These included the headquarters of the German-Israeli Society, an organisation that lobbies for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) to be designated a terrorist group, and a building reportedly associated with Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about foreign intelligence activities within Germany.
