What happened

The Polish Navy has launched its first signal intelligence (SIGINT) vessel, ORP Jerzy Różycki, on 1 July 2025 at the Remontowa Shipbuilding SA shipyard in Gdańsk. It marks a milestone in Poland’s naval modernization under the “Delfin” program, developed with the Swedish defense company Saab.
Named after cryptologist Jerzy Różycki, the ship will serve as a key maritime electronic intelligence asset. It is currently being fitted with reconnaissance and mission systems supplied by Saab, capable of supporting ELINT, COMINT, and IMINT operations. A second ship, ORP Henryk Zygalski, is under construction and also named after a Polish cryptologist.
The vessels are designed for interoperability with Swedish systems, enabling joint maritime awareness and information sharing. Poland’s recent acquisition of two Saab 340 AEW aircraft with Erieye radar complements this naval effort.
Construction began in April 2023, with service entry expected by 2027, per a €620 million contract signed in 2022. The Delfin program reflects broader strategic cooperation between Poland and Sweden, launched in 2023. In 2024, Saab opened a local office in Gdańsk to support the program. While Remontowa leads shipbuilding, other Polish defense firms are involved, though their roles remain confidential.
