What happened

As detailed in a recent Europol report, Maltese authorities apprehended three individuals last year for alleged involvement in terrorist activities. The individuals taken into custody include two Syrian males, aged 20 and 22 respectively, and a 32-year-old male from the Ivory Coast. These arrests coincide with a noted increase in terrorism-related events within the European Union throughout 2024. Europol’s findings indicate that a total of 58 terrorist incidents, either executed or thwarted, occurred across 20 EU member states, representing a considerable escalation from the 14 incidents recorded in 2023. Of the 58 incidents, 34 were successfully executed, five were unsuccessful, and 19 were prevented through law enforcement intervention. Throughout the year, a total of 449 individuals were apprehended by authorities in connection with these attacks.
