What happened

Following an in-depth assessment conducted with national security and intelligence agencies, the Australian Government officially listed Terrorgram as a terrorist organisation under the Criminal Code Act 1995 in June 2025. Terrorgram is a decentralised violent extremist network that operates on encrypted platforms such as Telegram. It is known for inciting attacks against minority groups and critical infrastructure. Similar measures have been adopted by the United States and the United Kingdom, and this declaration carries prison sentences of up to 25 years for anyone supporting or participating in the group’s activities. According to the Minister for Home Affairs, this move aims to target extremist networks that have inspired attacks in countries such as Slovakia, Brazil, Turkey, and the United States. However, experts and officials warn that legal enforcement, while essential, is not sufficient. Structural policies are also required to address the underlying causes of radicalisation, such as economic inequality, social isolation, and institutional distrust, to strengthen the resilience of Australian society against violent extremism.
