Since the beginning of 2025, and up to early June, approximately 220,000 Chikungunya virus disease (CHIKVD) cases and 80 related deaths have been reported in 14 countries/territories. Cases have been reported in the Americas, Africa and Asia, while continental Europe has still to detect any infection. However, CHIKVD outbreaks are ongoing in Réunion and Mayotte, the most peripheral regions of the European Union. Since the start of 2025, the Americas have had the highest number of reported CHIKVD cases globally.
The likelihood of transmission of dengue and chikungunya viruses in continental Europe is linked to importation of the virus by viraemic travellers to receptive areas with active and well-established competent vectors, namely Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Aedes albopictus is present in much of Europe. Aedes aegypti is instead present in Cyprus, on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, and in the outer region of Madeira.
