Health authorities in Edo State have confirmed six cases and three deaths in an ongoing diphtheria outbreak. Over the weekend, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, Edo State Commissioner for Health, provided updates on the situation. The diphtheria cases are spread across six local government areas, but Dr Oshiomhole reassured residents that the outbreak is being managed effectively. He urged parents to vaccinate their children and revealed that the state has already received 90 anti-diphtheria vaccine doses thanks to the efforts of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and Governor Monday Okpebholo. Dr Oshiomhole said the forthcoming vaccination campaign will target children between five and fourteen, aiming at the broadest possible coverage.
Meanwhile, state authorities have provided critical medical supplies and personal protective equipment to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where infected persons are receiving treatment. Residents are advised to maintain clean surroundings, observe personal hygiene, and practice physical distancing to prevent the risk of infection.
