A group of armed men aboard eight vehicles and more than 200 motorbikes attacked the village of Banibangou, in Niger, on June 19. Following a violent clash, the attackers were able to seize the village, withdrawing later towards the Malian border. According to the Niger Ministry of Defense, during the raid, 34 soldiers have been killed and 14 have been wounded.
The action is ascribable to the Islamic State – Sahel Province (ISSP), known active in the area. The village, close to the Malian border, had been already attacked by ISSP in 2020 when more than 200 soldiers died.
