What happened

On June 5, 2025, the Ministry of Health of Côte d’Ivoire formally announced the occurrence of a cholera outbreak. It has been reported that, since May 25, 2025, there have been cases of severe acute diarrhea in Ako Brakré, a remote neighbourhood within the Port-Bouët/Vridi health district. These cases present with symptoms of vomiting and abdominal cramps. This district has poor hygienic conditions, with direct discharges of excreta into the lagoon, contaminated water, and poor waste management. Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae in the waters of the affected areas, with 46 confirmed cases of cholera, including seven deaths, as of June 9, 2025.
