What happened

An individual held in custody at the ‘Ernesto Mari’ penitentiary in Trieste, Italy, has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Cattinara Hospital. The patient is exhibiting symptoms consistent with invasive bacterial disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis, as reported by the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority (ASUGI). The patient is currently isolated, and their condition is stable. The territorial Public Health and Hygiene Structure has implemented preventative measures to control the propagation of the disease and safeguard public health. Approximately sixty inmates and fifty custodial officers who had close contact with the infected patient are undergoing prophylactic treatment. Continuous surveillance has not revealed any further instances of infection.
