Mozambican health authorities have recently declared a cholera outbreak in Marromeu, Sofala province, in the centre of the country. So far, 32 people have been diagnosed with the disease and admitted to hospital, mostly in Marromeu and Chido. There have also been three deaths. Edgar Meque, the head of the Sofala Public Health Department, said the outbreak declaration was based on clinical and epidemiological criteria. Several measures have already been implemented to contain the spread of the disease, including the distribution of medicines and water purifiers.
Sofala is not the only Mozambican province affected by cholera. The African country has recorded almost 3900 infections and 59 deaths in just over seven months, mostly concentrated in the northern province of Nampula. Cases and fatalities have also been reported in the central provinces of Tete and Manica.
