What happened

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has acknowledged a strategic contribution from Japan to bolster the National Mine Action Authority (NMAA) of South Sudan in its oversight of the mine action sector. South Sudan remains heavily affected by explosive ordnance contamination, disproportionately impacting children and obstructing humanitarian aid, infrastructure access, and refugee resettlement. The Japanese-funded initiative aims to enhance NMAA’s operational effectiveness through technical assistance, mentoring, and planning support. It also promotes regional knowledge-sharing with the Cambodia Mine Action Centre and advances gender inclusion via the NMAA’s Gender Equality and Diversity policy. This support reinforces South Sudan’s objective to eliminate all known landmine contamination by 2030 and underscores Japan’s enduring humanitarian commitment.
