US raises alert in Italy over terrorism risk

In light of recent developments, the United States has elevated the terrorism alert level for Italy to 2 out of 4, encouraging visitors to ‘exercise increased vigilance due to terrorism.’ Further information on this subject can be found on the website of the US State Department, last updated on 23 May 2025. The State Department has issued a series of recommendations to travellers, including maintaining a state of vigilance, monitoring local media outlets, and developing an emergency plan. Additionally, travellers are advised to subscribe to the ‘Step’ program, which enables the reception of alerts from the embassy. According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, there is currently no specific information available on the organisation of hostile events on the national territory. It should be noted that the national alert level has been at maximum since 7 October 2023, which corresponds to the day of the Hamas attack on Israel. This directive is applicable to all designated targets and locations deemed sensitive. Prefect Francesco Tagliente, former Police Chief of Rome, was interviewed by the media and provided reassurance about the constant monitoring of national security by an advanced system of prevention and contrast. The oversight of this system is the responsibility of the Committee for Strategic Analysis of Anti-terrorism. This body integrates information, assessments, and operational strategies in real time through a system of cooperation between apparatuses, intelligence, and law enforcement.
