What happened

The Iran Aluminium Company (IRALCO) has been sentenced by a court to plant and maintain thousands of trees over two years. The sentence is part of a broader environmental penalty aimed at compensating for the company’s air pollution and its health and environmental damage. Indeed, the court has also ordered IRALCO to pay a massive fine to the Iranian government treasury. Additionally, the company should maintain approximately one hectare of existing urban green space near its facilities in Arak. This service will be carried out under the supervision of local authorities.
The case against IRALCO began with a formal complaint by Arak’s Environmental Protection Department and was pursued due to the serious health risks posed by the company’s emissions. After a detailed investigation, the company was found guilty of threatening public health through air pollution. The sentence is seen as a confirmation of the Iranian judicial authorities’ commitment to environmental accountability.
