Ghana Health Service (GHS) has activated its surveillance system and risk communication activities to contain the spread of Mpox in the Western Region. The initiative is directed by the Western Regional Directorate of the GHS and aims to stem the expansion of the disease after the first case of Mpox in the region was reported on May 17. Mr Daniel Bomfeh, the Western Regional Health Promotion Manager, said the Directorate activated enhanced sensitisation mechanisms to educate the public about the disease and its prevention measures. Mr Bomfeh added that the primary mode of infection was from animals to humans and cautioned the public against touching dead wild animals, especially rodents. He also advised people to wash their hands regularly, remain vigilant, and seek medical attention when experiencing symptoms like fever, joint pains, and rashes. Health workers should instead use PPEs when dealing with ill persons and practice Infection Prevention and Control measures to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
