What happened

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, have entered into a partnership agreement to implement sustainable financing of immunization systems in low- and middle-income countries. Under the agreement, the AIIB is to provide financing of a maximum of $1 billion to support health projects. This financing will be matched with financial resources from GAVI, with the amount allocated to each country determined by demand. It will underpin critical investments, including the strengthening of immunisation infrastructure, the procurement of vaccines, and the introduction of high-impact vaccines in middle-income countries. In light of the escalating threat of infectious diseases, the partnership seeks to assist more countries in achieving long-term sustainability for their immunization programmes and health infrastructure, as stated by GAVI CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar. AIIB and GAVI are united in their shared objective of enhancing health outcomes and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of low- and middle-income countries. As a result of this policy, 19 countries have successfully exited GAVI support over the past 25 years. These countries include Indonesia and India, who have both become GAVI donors.
