What happened

According to official sources, at least 13 people, including nine civilians, were killed when Indonesian troops attempted to dispose of rejected ammunition by detonating it in a pit. The detonation occurred in Garut district, West Java province, approximately 190 miles from the capital, following the successful disposal of two previous batches of ammunition. Four of the victims were soldiers, but the reasons for the presence of civilians in the area at the time remain unclear. The detonation resulted in a conflagration at the depot, necessitating the evacuation of the surrounding area by the authorities. There were no reported casualties. A comprehensive investigation has been initiated following the occurrence of analogous incidents at a military ammunition depot situated on the outskirts of Jakarta.
