What happened

Thailand Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin confirmed that no new anthrax cases have been detected in Mukdahan province. The total number of infected individuals remains at four, including one fatality. Surveillance of over 600 contacts has concluded without identifying further cases. However, Somsak urged residents to stay alert and advised against slaughtering animals and consuming raw meat. He also emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance in high-risk areas. People should immediately report any unusual animal death to livestock officials.

Anthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by spore-forming bacteria. It is common among cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep. Infected animals can transmit it to humans through contact with their blood, meat, or organs. In severe cases, the illness can lead to death. In Mukdahan, health authorities said that the three surviving cases remain hospitalized, two at Mukdahan Hospital and one at Don Tan Hospital. Of the 636 people identified as at risk, all have completed the required seven-day observation period without showing symptoms. However, officials continue to advise the public to avoid raw beef and to cook meat thoroughly to kill any anthrax bacteria.
