What happened

Ahead of the monsoon, the Indian state of Maharashtra is recording a sharp increase in chikungunya cases. According to the National Center for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC), they have risen from 473 in 2024 to 658 this year. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far, a significant improvement from last year. If chikungunya is on the rise, other vector-borne diseases in the state remain under control. Up to April 21 this year, there have been 2726 malaria cases, a slight decrease from the 2867 recorded in the same period of 2024. Dengue cases have also declined from 1639 to 1373. Importantly, there have also been zero fatalities from these diseases so far. According to a senior official from the state vector control unit, the lack of deaths shows a marked improvement in the detection and treatment of cases. However, the rise of chikungunya infections is a sign of alarm before the start of the monsoon. Therefore, the official remarked on the importance of intensified surveillance and source reduction efforts to safeguard public health.
