What happened

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will send 200,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to support the country as it responds to the outbreak by administering over half a million doses of Mpox vaccine since October 2024. WHO has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) after nearly 31,000 cases were confirmed in 24 African countries between 2024 and 23 April 2025, and the latest Mpox strain, clade Ib, has affected 16 countries outside Africa. The distribution of doses from the current stockpile will focus on the hardest-hit areas, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable populations, those living in regions where significant population movements have facilitated the spread of the disease. The vaccine supply results from international health collaboration through the strategic partnership with Gavi. To date, Gavi has provided nearly half a million doses to nine African countries as the lead vaccine supplier to the Global Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) for Mpox. Following the pre-purchase agreement with Bavarian Nordic in September 2024, 500,000 doses were immediately made available to the African countries most affected by the outbreak: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nigeria, Rwanda, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Kenya.
