What happened

A massive blackout in Spain has forced several nuclear power plants (NPPs) to shut down. The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) reported that three plants were automatically shut down due to the blackout, with the reactors now running on emergency diesel generators. The blackout caused widespread disruption, with passengers stranded in metro stations and trains cancelled. Transport was also badly affected, with traffic lights failing across the country. Regarding the NPPs, the CSN clarified that the reactors in the operating plants (Almaraz II, Asco I and II, Vandellos II) automatically shut down as planned after the power cut. Emergency diesel generators were activated to keep the plants in a safe condition. The CSN assured that the event had no impact on workers, the public or the environment, and its emergency response organisation was activated to monitor the situation.
