On 17 March 2025, Tajikistan and Russia signed a cooperation agreement in Moscow focusing on the reclamation of areas affected by uranium mining. The agreement was signed by Sherali Kabir, Tajik Minister of Industry and New Technologies, and Alexey Likhachev, Director General of ROSATOM, during a meeting between President Emomali Rahmon and President Vladimir Putin. The initiative targets the Adrasman tailings storage facility and waste dumps at the Taboshar industrial site in the Sughd region of Tajikistan. The planned reclamation activities aim to improve environmental conditions, optimise land use and support socio-economic development in the affected areas. This agreement has been signed to address radiation safety concerns and rehabilitate contaminated land, ensuring better living conditions for local communities, while also strengthening bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and expanding their joint efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development.
