What happened

On 21 February 2025, ROSATOM successfully completed the commissioning of the first standby diesel generator at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 1 in Büyükeceli, Mersin province, Turkey. This generator is part of the plant’s active safety systems and ensures uninterrupted power supply in the event of an external power failure. Step-by-step verification tests have been carried out by specialists on the generator, confirming its reliability and readiness for operation under load. Akkuyu NPP will have three standby diesel generator sets per unit, providing 72 hours of autonomous power supply without refuelling. The installation of standby diesel generators is a critical safety measure for nuclear power plants, ensuring continuous operation even during power outages. These generators will support the cold and hot tests of the reactor, which are a mandatory step prior to full operation. The project is in line with Türkiye’s energy security strategy and strengthens the reliability and safety of its first NPP.
