What happened

Two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed between Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Kazakhstan, paving the way for a collaborative uranium research project. These two agreements were signed on 3rd and 4th March 2025, with Al-Farabi National University and the Institute of High Technologies (IHT, the research branch of Kazatomprom). The primary objective of the collaboration is to investigate uranium concentrations in seawater and groundwater, as well as to evaluate uranium adsorbents (a key technology still under development by KHNP). Should the research prove successful, it could result in an expansion in technological cooperation between South Korea and Kazakhstan. The aim of this partnership is to explore new methods of uranium extraction, enhancing resource availability and reducing reliance on traditional mining. KHNP is currently engaged in research and development of a novel process for the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable alternative to conventional sources of uranium. Should Kazakhstan’s water resources prove viable for uranium extraction, this collaboration would enhance nuclear energy security and stimulate technological innovation in both South Korea and Kazakhstan.
