During a cancer awareness event at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, medical experts emphasised the role of pesticides in the development of breast cancer, especially in women working in the agricultural sector. Dr Farah Arshad, associate director of breast and endocrine surgery, said that pesticides can interfere with hormones, including estrogen, which is associated with breast cancer. Exposure to these chemicals can disrupt breast tissue and increase the risk of breast cancer in old age. Senior director of medical oncology, Dr Alok Gupta, talked instead about progress in cancer treatment, especially targeted therapies that have improved patient survival rates. Today, over 700 cancer-related genes can be analysed, helping to design better responses to the disease. Finally, Max Institute of Cancer Care chairman Dr Harit Chaturvedi urged a stronger focus on prevention and early intervention, complaining that 75% of cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early detection and awareness are critical for managing the increasing number of lifestyle-related cancers. The event in Lucknow saw the participation of over 300 cancer survivors with their families. District Magistrate Vishak G also attended the meeting and emphasised the need to support those affected by cancer.
