On July 8, 2025, an explosion occurred at the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) facility in Ambalamugal, Kochi, due to the failure of an underground high-voltage power cable operated by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The incident triggered a fire and significant smoke emissions, prompting an immediate response from the company’s fire brigade and local authorities. As a precautionary measure, approximately 45 families living in the nearby Ayyankuzhi area were evacuated. Some individuals reported minor respiratory discomfort and received medical attention. No casualties or major structural damage to the facility have been reported. Technical teams from BPCL and KSEB, supported by Civil Protection Units, worked to secure the area and restore safe operating conditions. Relevant authorities have launched investigations to determine the root cause of the incident and assess any potential impact on the facility’s operational continuity.
