What happened

In 2024, Core Power, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and Athlos Energy launched a collaboration to evaluate the use of floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs) in the Mediterranean. The goal is to provide clean, safe, and continuous energy to islands, ports, and coastal communities, addressing challenges such as decarbonisation, water supply, and remote electrification.
The study, led by the ABS Global Ship Systems Centre, will assess the feasibility of the project in the Aegean Sea through a PESTLE analysis (political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental) and will result in the publication of a white paper accessible to both institutions and industry.
According to Core Power, the mass production of FNPPs in shipyards offers a scalable and efficient solution to current energy needs. The project is part of the broader “Liberty” programme, launched by Core Power to develop a maritime nuclear supply chain by 2035. In parallel, a partnership with Westinghouse is underway to develop compact reactors and innovative regulatory technologies.
