Nunavut: tuberculosis outbreaks declared over in Pond Inlet and Pangnirtung

What happened

On July 2, Nunavut’s Department of Health declared that the tuberculosis outbreaks in Pond Inlet and Pangnirtung have been resolved. The declaration came after extensive investigations and consultations by health professionals with community partners and leaders. In Pangnirtung, 47 active cases and 225 latent cases of tuberculosis were recorded since January 2021, while Pond Inlet registered 13 active cases and 117 latent cases since January 2023. According to the territorial government, all cases have been assessed and treated, and the risk of transmission is currently low. Local communities are still encouraged to be aware of the disease symptoms and seek care if needed. There are still two active outbreaks of tuberculosis in Nunavut in Arviat and Naujaat.
