What happened

In response to the anthrax epidemic in North Kivu, the World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented a comprehensive, multi-sectoral strategy under the “One Health” framework. Following the detection of anthrax spores in wildlife and subsequent human cases, WHO collaborated with national authorities and international partners to strengthen surveillance, clinical management, and cross-border coordination. Over four tonnes of medical supplies were distributed to affected health zones, and community education campaigns were launched to enhance disease prevention. The response plan also emphasized the safe management of animal carcasses and the vaccination of at-risk livestock. Despite significant logistical and security challenges, WHO’s efforts have facilitated early detection, effective treatment, and the containment of the outbreak, thereby safeguarding both human and animal populations.
