What happened

On the night of 30 June, a powerful explosion shook the Torrevecchia area of Rome, Italy. The explosion occurred on Via Guido Calcagnini. The blast, which is believed to have been caused by a homemade explosive device (HME), heavily damaged the entrance to a residential building but caused no injuries. The explosion could be heard in the surrounding neighbourhoods, prompting evacuations and the establishment of a police cordon. Initial suspicions of a gas leak were dismissed by Italgas. Investigators found fragments of an explosive device, and initial theories suggest that the explosion was an act of intimidation related to criminal rackets or drug trafficking. Just weeks earlier, a motorbike was set on fire nearby in what was suspected to be a retaliatory act. Authorities are now exploring any potential links.
