The Argentine Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Leonardo Bertulazzi, a former Red Brigades member, to Italy. The final decision now rests with President Javier Milei. Bertulazzi was arrested in Buenos Aires on 29 August 2024, after the Argentine authorities revoked his refugee status, which had been granted in 2004. He was released from custody in November. He had previously been arrested in the Argentine capital in 2002, following a joint investigation by local police, the Genoa DIGOS unit, and Interpol. He was released after a few months. A fugitive since 1980, Bertulazzi was sentenced to 27 years in prison in Italy for terrorism-related crimes, including kidnapping, subversive association, and armed gang membership. He took part in the kidnapping of naval engineer Piero Costa in Genoa in 1977, for which the Red Brigades received a ransom that was used to finance their operations, including the abduction of Aldo Moro.
