What happened

On 30 June 2025, Somalia officially implemented the PISCES (Personal Identification Secure Comparison and Evaluation System) biometric platform at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. Developed in the United States, PISCES is already active in 23 countries and allows real-time screening of travellers using biometric data — fingerprints and facial recognition — which is cross-checked against international watchlists. Supported by the U.S. government, the project aims to combat human trafficking, irregular migration, and terrorist threats. Before the official launch, Somali border officers underwent specialised training led by US experts, highlighting the depth of bilateral cooperation in the civilian and security sectors. This initiative forms part of a wider modernisation programme encompassing a new ICAO-compliant biometric e-passport, a digital visa application platform, and an agreement with INTERPOL to integrate global law enforcement databases. By taking this step, Somalia is enhancing its border control, promoting institutional trust, and aligning itself with international standards in security and governance.
