What happened

A large fire broke out on the evening of Tuesday, 1 July, at a facility operated by Eco Ambiente Sud in contrada Fascianello, near the SS16 road in Fasano. The facility, which processes electronic and hazardous waste, was engulfed in flames, with a dense black smoke plume visible from several kilometres away. Emergency services, including firefighters, local police, civil protection units, and carabinieri, promptly intervened to contain the blaze and secure the area. Additional firefighting resources from other locations were mobilized.
The mayor of Fasano urged residents in affected areas to keep windows closed and remain indoors as a precaution. The regional environmental agency, ARPA Puglia, deployed technical teams to monitor air quality and analyse the smoke for potential harmful substances.
