The detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) in a remote area of Borno farmland, Nigeria, during a routine water-fetching mission resulted in the death of a teenage girl and the serious injury of another. The victims, aged 16 and 17, were residents of an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. They had gone to a nearby borehole when one of them accidentally triggered the hidden device, which is suspected to have been planted by ISWAP militants. The explosion resulted in fatal injuries to one girl and multiple wounds to the other. Military forces from Operation Hadin Kai, along with EOD-CBRN specialists, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, and local hunters, responded swiftly to the scene. They secured the area, cleared it of further threats, and declared it safe. The injured girl was evacuated to a nearby hospital, where she remains under medical care. This incident highlights the disturbing trend of armed groups increasingly targeting civilians by planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along paths and in farmland in remote regions.
