Residents and politicians in the Tees Valley, northeast England, are protesting plans to establish a nuclear waste site near a local natural reserve. The planned site is in Port Clarence, Stockton, and uses an area already set for the disposal of hazardous waste. However, managing company Augean still needs official permission to use the area for nuclear materials. The company insists that risk assessments have demonstrated the complete safety of the operation. There has also been a constant exchange of information with the Environment Agency (EA) to comply with the rigorous requirements of the determination process. However, local politicians such as Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen are not persuaded and firmly reject any implementation of the project.
A public meeting will be held on July 15 at the site to discuss the issue. The EA said it welcomed any comments on the plan and emphasised the importance of engaging the local community to reach a final decision on the Augean application.
