What happened

A 72-year-old male farmer from the Larissa region of Greece has died following infection with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), which was transmitted via a tick bite. The patient was initially admitted to the municipal hospital, where a physician providing medical care subsequently contracted the illness. The physician has been promptly placed in isolation within the infectious diseases unit; their condition is currently stable and demonstrating improvement. Following this infection, twenty-five individuals were placed under quarantine, including close contacts of the deceased and healthcare personnel. While none have presented with symptoms, ten are classified within vulnerable categories. Concurrently, a team from the National Public Health Organization (EODY) has collected biological specimens and fifteen ticks from the affected geographical area, which are presently undergoing laboratory analysis. It marks the second recorded fatality associated with this particular fever in Greece, the first having occurred in 2008.
