In just one week (June 16 to 22), Saxony has recorded 68 new Lyme disease infections, bringing the total number of cases so far this year to 535. It is a significant increase compared to the same period last year when the total number of cases was 456. Almost all of Saxony is affected by the spread of the disease, with the notable exception of the Leipzig area. Of the last 68 infections, 10 were in Dresden and 11 in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. At the same time, the last epidemiological data indicate a consistent decline in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases. In the week from June 16 to 22, there was just one new case in the Vogtland region. It brings the total so far this year to five, around one-third of that registered in Saxony during the same period in 2024.
Last year, Saxony had 1,628 Lyme disease and 63 TBE cases, marking a sharp increase compared to the numbers recorded in 2023.
