A suspected case of Dengue virus infection has been detected in Picenza, Italy, prompting the initiation of an extraordinary disinfestation programme to counter the spread of the tiger mosquito in affected areas of the city. The adulticidal disinfestation programme, which includes door-to-door operations to remove larval outbreaks on private properties, is subject to official confirmation of the suspected case by local health authorities.During the treatments, it is vital that citizens comply with the necessary precautions to protect public health. This means staying indoors, closing doors and windows, sheltering pets, suspending the use of air exchange systems and not consuming any products from vegetable gardens in the indicated areas. The municipal ordinance ordering the extraordinary disinfestation will be revoked if laboratory tests exclude the presence of the virus.
