What happened

The Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform of Namibia issued a notification about the first case of rabies in a cape fur seal ever recorded in the country. The animal was observed at Walvis Bay Lagoon (Erongo Region), showing clinical signs associated with rabies on June 13, 2025. Post-mortem laboratory tests confirmed it positive for Lyssavirus on June 16.
