The Italian Ministry of Health has documented a rise in COVID-19 infections within Italy. Specifically, 420 new cases were identified nationally from June 5 to June 11, 2025. It represents an increase compared to the 334 cases reported in the preceding week, from May 29 to June 4. The number of fatalities has remained consistent with the prior week, with seven deaths recorded in each period. The increase in the positivity rate, from 1.4% to 1.7%, indicates a modest elevation in viral transmission. Lombardy registered the most significant rise among the Italian regions, with 134 new cases reported between June 5 and June 11, compared to 93 cases in the previous week. A similar trend has been observed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which has reported a minor surge in SARS-CoV-2 circulation across Europe recently, attributed to the propagation of the new variant designated NB.1.8.1, also known as ‘Nimbus’.
