What happened

Kansas health officials said the measles outbreak is considered resolved in some counties. However, other counties continue to report new cases of the disease. On June 18, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) said that five of the nine state counties (Finney, Grant, Kiowa, Morton, Stevens) affected by the measles outbreak did not detect new cases for more than 42 days. It means that the outbreak is considered over within their territory. The remaining four counties (Ford, Gray, Haskell, Pawnee) are instead in active status, meaning they have had at least a measles case reported within the past 42 days. During the past week, two new cases were identified in Haskell County. KDHE also said Kansas has had so far 79 measles cases statewide.
In the state, measles has primarily affected unvaccinated youth. Thirty cases are children under four years old, which is when the second measles vaccine dose is recommended, and twenty-two are ages five to ten years old. At least 66 cases have not been vaccinated, and one was under-vaccinated for their age.
