What happened

An explosion at “Shanzhou Fireworks Co.”, a factory located near the city of Changde in Hunan Province, southern China, killed nine people and injured 26 others, according to State media. The blast occurred on Monday, June 16, shortly before 8:30 a.m. Firefighters responding to the scene encountered secondary hazards and the risk of additional explosions, which complicated rescue efforts. To manage these dangers, they used remote-controlled water cannons during more than 20 hours of continuous operations, supported by 28 water tankers and two drainage vehicles. The Hunan provincial government has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and to ensure legal accountability. This tragedy is the latest in a series of industrial accidents in China, underscoring persistent concerns about workplace safety.
