During an event for World Environment Day in Botleng, the Mpumalanga MEC for agriculture, rural development, land, and environmental affairs, Nompumelelo Hlophe, has urged the public to take action against plastic pollution. Accompanied by traditional leaders and local mayors, Hlophe said that it is everyone’s duty to declare war on this “enemy” and expressed appreciation for the community-based organisations, NGOs, and waste pickers who work behind the scenes to battle it.
Celebrated annually on June 5, World Environment Day serves to promote environmental awareness and education. Hlophe and other provincial officials celebrated the occasion by participating in a clean-up campaign, handing over garden tools, and distributing food parcels to Botleng residents.
