What happened

In response to a dawn assault on the Timbuktu base, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) executed a counter-offensive, neutralizing 13 insurgents and seizing weaponry. No FAMa casualties were reported. The al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for coordinated attacks across Timbuktu and Kidal via Az Zallaqa. In Kidal, an IED targeted a military convoy allegedly transporting FAMa personnel and Russian operatives, consistent with JNIM’s strategy to disrupt logistical routes post-MINUSMA withdrawal. Kidal remains contested, with Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) factions and JNIM active in Tinzaoutene. Additional JNIM activity was reported near Timbuktu’s Asday outpost. Parallel hostilities occurred on June 1 across central and southern Mali, and northern Burkina Faso. In Boulikessi (Douentza region), FAMa launched an air-supported counterattack following another insurgent strike, acknowledging combat losses in their official communiqué.
