What happened

On Tuesday, June 10, emergency services responded to a chemical incident at the Ithaca Water Treatment Plant. Officials said there is no risk to public health or the city’s water supply. The incident happened when two chemicals were accidentally mixed during a routine delivery, creating chlorine gas. Firefighters intervened and monitored the area, determining that the facility was safe to enter. However, the following day, plant workers found residual gas in the facility. The fire department was called back, and a hazmat team worked to ensure the building was completely safe for staff to re-enter.
City officials said that there is no threat to the public as the gas quickly disperses in the open air and does not affect the water supply. They added that they are working with the Bolton Point Water System to guarantee residents will not experience any disruption in the service.
