A chemical spill at a cheese factory in County Down, Northern Ireland, resulted in five people being taken to hospital for further treatment. The incident happened at the Leprino cheese factory near the village of Margheralin on the evening of June 6. According to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), four fire appliances and a Command Support Unit attended the scene along with several emergency ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said 17 people needed treatment for injuries. Two firefighters and three other people were later admitted to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
It is unclear what chemicals were involved in the incident. However, fire officials said that there was no risk to the public beyond the factory and a 100-metre exclusion zone set around it. The incident was brought under control after a few hours.
