On June 5, a press release shared by the FBI Portland Field Office informed that federal law enforcement agents and local partners had arrested a teenager originating from Columbia County, Oregon, on May 22. According to a series of investigations that commenced on May 19, 2025, the teenager aimed to conduct an improvised explosive attack and mass shooting event at the Three Rivers Mall in Kelso, Washington, on May 22, 2025. Gathered evidence indicated that the suspect, whose identity and personal details have not been shared by the FBI, demonstrated the intent and means to carry out the plan. Among the recovered possessions were a map of the mall and a route the shooter would follow. The plan also involved the use of a homemade chlorine bomb to incite panic and then open fire on mall patrons as they were exiting a movie theatre located inside the mall. The teenager, as the final part of his plan, organized to commit suicide at a pre-established location inside the mall. The Columbia County District Attorney’s office is prosecuting this case.
