What happened

During the period from January 1st to May 31st, 2025, the National Surveillance System, under the coordination of the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), documented 60 confirmed cases of Dengue fever. All of these cases were linked to international travel, with a median age of 41 years and a gender distribution of 53% male. No fatalities were reported. Furthermore, 13 confirmed cases of Chikungunya virus were recorded, all associated with travel abroad, exhibiting a median age of 50 years and a male predominance of 54%, with no deaths. The surveillance also identified 4 imported cases of Zika virus, with no associated deaths. Additionally, 5 autochthonous cases of tick-borne meningoencephalitis were confirmed, with no reported deaths. Finally, 1 case of the Toscana virus was documented, also without mortality. Given that the summer season presents an elevated risk for arboviral infections due to increased vector activity, particularly mosquitoes, public health officials advise the population to implement suitable precautions to minimize vector exposure during the period conducive to transmission.
